Siding, or wall cladding, is the protective material attached to the exterior walls of a house or other building. When it comes to siding profiles, there are many different options to consider. These various joinery techniques are all secure against environmental elements, and so the method you choose is most dependent on taste and design goals. Siding profiles refer to the “look” of your home siding, or how it is installed to create your home siding design. There are many different joinery methods that achieve these siding profiles, including lap siding, board and batten siding, shingle or shake siding, cottage or dutch lap siding, nickel gap or ship lap siding, v-groove, and channel rusting siding.
Simply put, board and batten siding is a siding installation method in which siding planks are installed vertically, along side each other, and then a smaller board, or a batten, is installed on top of the vertical planks at the seam to cover up the space between.
This differs from other siding options, such as shingle/shake—shakes are split and shingles are sawn smooth—which cuts and tapers the shingles in an overlapping pattern; or lap siding, in which planks are laid horizontally across the wall, starting from the bottom and building up, the board below overlapped by the board above. Lap siding can also include cottage or Dutch lap and nickel gap, more commonly known as ship lap.
Board and batten siding usually uses 4×10 panels on the wall, and then a batten is placed every four feet. Stylistically, board and batten siding creates a clean and multi-dimensional effect that is popular in older Midwestern-style architecture as well as the current farmhouse style. It is often used on higher walls or gable walls because of its elongating effect.
Board and batten siding resembles an old rural look, but that does not mean it has to be crafted in wood. In fact, our Bellwether experts advise against wood siding for Colorado homes, assuring our homeowners that choosing a different material does not mean sacrificing their design goals.
The board and batten joinery technique can be accomplished with any siding material.
