The other distinguishing factors between window types are the panes and the low-E coatings for energy efficiency. Low-E refers to a metallic oxide material that is applied to window surfaces to deflect UV and infrared rays. This is particularly important in Colorado, where they sun is close and intense. UV and infrared infiltration can affect your home’s efficiency and appearance, due to sun fading, both inside and outside.
Double-paned windows are more common, especially in the Colorado market. They have an interior panel and an exterior panel, and both of these panes have a total of four potential surfaces for low-E coating.
Triple-paned windows are not necessary in the arid Colorado climate where the temperatures are less extreme. Typically, the only reason for installing triple-paned windows in Colorado is to prevent noise pollution in urban or high-traffic areas. The additional layer if effective in blocking out sound.
Our window and siding experts are trained to evaluate your windows efficiency and functionality, and because siding and windows work together to make your home beautiful and functional, we can assess both factors at the same time.
There are three telltale signs that your home needs new windows.
Glazing bead is a strip around the window inside the window frame. It is meant to support the pane of glass and seal it from the elements. Due to environmental elements, such as hail, this glazing bead can work its way outside of the window frame, making the frame vulnerable to cracking. If your glazing bead is visible outside your window, it is time for a replacement window.
While your home may have some fixed windows, most windows are designed to open and close. There are single-hung windows, with a fixed-top portion, and a bottom piece that moves up and down; double-hung windows, with pieces on both top and bottom, that move up and down to open and close; sliding windows, that have moving pieces which slide from side-to-side; casement windows, which are installed with side hinges, and open and close in a swinging fashion; and awning windows, with hinges on the top so that the window swings outward from the bottom. If your windows are not functioning in accordance with their design, it is time to replace your windows.
When we replace windows on Colorado homes, we prefer to install full-frame, new construction windows with a nail flange all the way around the frame. With this method, the window is set from the outside in and fits right against your home’s sheathing. We then secure the flange with fasteners and an aggressive butyl tape, which is not as sensitive to temperature changes as a more traditional rubber adhesive. The taping seals the window, keeping out moisture and wind penetration. A full frame window installation is easy to replace in the future, and it sets into the house with a clean seal.
To replace a window without a frame or nail fin, we cut out the window and attach it from the side into the jamb of your window. This process requires more taping, caulk, and expansive foam, so it is not as secure as placing a window in a full frame. To replace windows without frames with full-frame windows, the siding must be cut away to fit the new frame—an excellent reason to have your windows replaced by siding experts.
The most obvious benefit of window replacement is energy efficiency. Without quality windows in the Colorado climate, your home interior can be exposed to moisture, winds, and other environmental elements, requiring increased use of heating and cooling measures. Energy-efficient windows will have a marked difference on your energy usage—and the associated costs.
But there also are many cosmetic reasons for replacing windows. Currently, dark, modern frames are a more popular aesthetic. Whether you want to update your home for resale value, or simply to refresh your home’s appearance, replacing the windows is an obvious upgrade.
There is an order of operation when it comes to renovating your Colorado home exterior, and Bellwether experts understand the best and most efficient practices of updating windows and siding. When we replace windows, we know the siding may be affected, so it is important to install windows first, and then address the siding.
Our team members also are long-time Colorado residents, and we understand the effects of altitude and climate on both windows and siding. We use our location-relevant knowledge to help you make the best window choices for energy efficiency, beautiful design, and long-lasting results.
