When it is time to choose your home’s siding, let our design team help you find the best option for your tastes and design goals.
Siding, or wall cladding, is the protective material attached to the exterior walls of a house or other building. Siding materials drive your home’s appearance and style, but siding is also a necessary, functional element of your home’s construction and efficiency. Home siding is a reliable and economical way to beautify and protect your home, with plenty of options to satisfy different tastes and budgets.
When it comes to siding profiles, there are many different options to consider. These various joinery techniques are all secure against environmental elements, and so the method you choose is most dependent on taste and design goals. At Bellwether, whatever siding profile you choose, we adhere to the highest standard of materials and installation practices so that you can focus on a home design that you love.
Siding profiles refer to the “look” of your home siding, or how it is installed to create your home siding design. There are many different joinery methods that achieve these siding profiles, including lap siding, board and batten siding, shingle or shake siding, cottage or dutch lap siding, nickel gap or ship lap siding, v-groove, and channel rusting siding.
Shingle/shake siding refers to the joinery technique in which smaller boards, typically 6-8 inches wide, are cut and tapered, then fit into an overlapping pattern. Traditionally, shingles were split from wood and shakes were deliberately sawed, each creating a sloping edge so that the small pieces could be patterned together.
This differs from other siding options, such as board and batten, which uses a vertical plank installation, with a small board, a batten, over the seam between those vertical planks; or lap siding, in which planks are laid horizontally across the wall, starting from the bottom and building up, the board below overlapped by the board above. Lap siding can also include cottage or Dutch lap and nickel gap, more commonly known as ship lap.
Shingle/shake siding is a classic, New England-inspired look that brings an established, country home air into a houses’s design. Shingles and shakes are available in a number of shapes and sizes, however some options require hand-cutting and can be cost-prohibitive. If you’re interested in the look of shingle/shake siding but are up against budget concerns, you could use the technique for an accent or design element in a smaller square footage area.
Due to the original methods of splitting shingles and sawing shakes, older homes clad with this technique general used wood materials. But given modern technology, there are now more siding options for a shingle/shake look. In fact, our Bellwether experts advise against wood siding for Colorado homes, because it is susceptible to fire dangers and requires immense maintenance. We can offer our homeowners different materials that do not sacrifice design goals.
If you want a shingle/shake look for your home, we recommend James Hardie fiber cement siding because it is resistant to fire, extreme temperatures, moisture damage, and baking sun. James Hardie also offers shake panels, achieving the individual shake look on an easier to install panel piece. When properly installed, these pieces create the staggered shadow lines of individual shingles, creating an organic profile.
Made from strong, composite elements, fiber cement siding preserves it performance integrity and its beauty. James Hardie fiber cement siding can be infused with any color of your choice, include 19 color choices from the Statement Collection and more than 700 curated color options in the James Hardie Dream Collection, or even choose from natural stain options so that your shingles can breathe.
The Bellwether in-house design team can work with you to find the siding profile, siding material, and beautiful color that meets your style goals for the home of your dreams.

Both shingle siding and shake siding refer to a siding style in which smaller boards, typically 6-8 inches wide, are cut and tapered, then fit into an overlapping pattern. Traditionally, shingles were split from wood and shakes were deliberately sawed, each creating a sloping edge so that the small pieces could be patterned together.
Shingle/shake siding is reminiscent of New England-style and coastal homes, but it can definitely be spotted throughout Colorado. Because shingle/shake siding requires a lot of material to cover large areas, some homeowners choose to use this style option in a smaller area as an accent.
A traditional shingle/shake house is designed with wood siding, but this style option can be achieved with any material. If you want a shingle/shake look for your home, we recommend James Hardie fiber cement siding because it is resistant to fire, extreme temperatures, moisture damage, and baking sun. James Hardie also offers shake panels, achieving the individual shake look on an easier to install panel piece.
