Rust wood home siding is a popular look for Colorado homes, especially in the Rocky Mountains. Our Bellwether siding experts and in-house design team understand the beauty and the drawbacks of cedar wood siding and can recommend alternative siding options for beautiful Colorado homes that are protected and comfortable inside and out.
Cedar wood siding is an eco-friendly, insulating option for wood siding. It is a versatile and durable wood siding material that offers natural insulation and a charming, rustic look.
In years past, cedar siding was cut thick and seasoned before installation. More modern cedar wood siding options are from newer wood that is harvested earlier, cut into thinner slabs, and organized into different grades based on the wood grain.
Though cedar wood siding offers a rustic mountain look, Bellwether experts advise against cedar wood siding products for Colorado homes, especially in the mountains, for many reasons. Though cedar wood siding performs better in the dry Colorado climate than other wood siding options, it does not hold up well to weather extremes like excess moisture or baking sun. For homes with southern exposure or all day exposure to the sun, cedar wood siding is susceptible to dry rot. The heat from the sun causes the wood grains to open and expand, making the wood brittle.
Brittle cedar wood siding has many drawbacks. First, it attracts birds, such as woodpeckers, who can easily drill into the wood siding. Though on other siding materials, you can patch woodpecker damage, it is difficult to replace cedar wood siding in a seamless and beautiful way.
Wood expansion and animal damage exposure cedar wood siding to additional moisture intrusion, which will exacerbate rotting and soften the cedar wood so that it begins to warp and cup. After this mutation has begun, it becomes a growing problem by exposing seams between the wood planks, opening for more moisture, more rot.
In instances where the brittle wood doesn’t warp from moisture damage but stays dry, cedar wood siding becomes vulnerable to wildfire, a particular problem for Colorado Front Range and mountain homes. The dried, damaged wood quickly burns with no hope of salvaging.
Not only do homes with cedar wood siding face many environmental challenges, they require heavy maintenance to maintain the beautiful look that makes cedar wood so appealing. Cedar wood siding will need to be re-stained and sealed as often as every two years, already making maintenance cost-prohibitive. And because of the woods aging process, cedar wood siding cannot easily be patched, and entire sections of cedar wood siding may need to be replaced as frequently as very five years.
Some homeowners may try to paint cedar wood siding, but this is a mistake. Cedar wood is incredibly porous and needs to be allowed to breath. Paints and other finishing products may suffocate the wood, trapping in moisture, and then causing the paint products to peel or flake away, or even blister as the wood is damaged.
The appeal of cedar wood siding is the rustic, natural style it presents, but our Bellwether in-house design team can help you achieve this look with modern and alternative siding options recommended by our experts. Many siding options imitate the beautiful look of wood grain and can be expertly installed to emulate the charm of cedar wood siding.
Our greatest recommendation is a fiber cement siding product, such as James Hardie fiber cement siding. Fiber cement siding is a beautiful siding option, comparable in appearance to wood siding, but created to withstand environmental elements such as fire, animals, and extreme Colorado weather. As an Elite Preferred James Hardie contractor, we can install your fiber cement siding to be as beautiful as cedar wood siding, with the added peace of mind that your home siding will serve at peak performance for years to come.
